National Post 04.08.2011
“‘Rock, rock, best rock on the block,” chirped a skeletal crack cocaine dealer, offering his poison to all passersby. It’s another Thursday morning on East Hastings Street, a wide commercial strip that runs the length of Vancouver’s notorious Downtown Eastside. It’s easy to forget that East Hastings was once a respectable retailers’ row, filled with department stores, clothiers and food merchants.
Free enterprise of another sort dominates now. Drugs, stolen goods, black market cigs and detritus fished from dumpsters are traded openly, the dope consumed on the spot. The illegal market activity is concentrated around a busy container recycling shop, United We Can. A worthy venture, it’s also a magnet for hustlers; they approach recyclers who are waiting their turn to enter the shop. They hit them up again when they exit, when they have some hard-earned cash in their jeans.”
- Brian Hutchinson, National Post.
A redevelopment proposal for one of the worst blocks in Vancouver’s downtown east side is currently being reviewed. It would turn the building that rests on top of the furiously busy bottle depot on East Hastings into market priced and low income housing, but would keep the bottle depot underneath. Here are some pictures I took for the National Post to accompany a story written by friend Brian Hutchinson.
